JUN 16 … This morning we continue our journey north through Kentucky, crossing the Ohio River, and traveling along fertile Indiana farmlands.  We travel to the remote town of French Lick Springs. Here we check into our hotel … The FRENCH LICK SPRINGS RESORT.  In 1845, the first hotel was built at French Lick Springs, drawing guests from afar to partake of the “miracle waters” from the sulfur springs that naturally surfaced in the area. In the early 1900’s the hotel was renovated, expanded, and luxurious furnishings and marble floors were added. Today the hotel is part of a resort that includes golf courses, a casino, and the preserved beauty of an era long gone. It was here in 1917 that chef Louis Perrin first created and served tomato juice.  Famous guests include John Barrymore, Clark Gable, Joe Louis, Bing Crosby, the Trumans, Elizabeth Taylor, Ronald Reagan, and Joe and Rose Kennedy.   Enjoy the evening with dinner, the shops, and casino on the far end, or sit out on the huge porch in front of the hotel.  (B,D)
